In an effort to respond to the Holy Father's call to implement the social teachings of the Church, the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace has initiated a series of Regional Seminars. The first was held in Kumasi, Ghana, in July 1999. The second such Seminar was for the East Asian and South-East region and was held from 21 to 23 November 1999 at Fujen Catholic University, Taipei, Taiwan.


The Seminar was prepared with the collaboration of the Chinese Regional Bishops' Conference (Taiwan). It was coordinated by the John Paul II Institute for Research into Dialogue for Peace at Fujen University.

The theme for the Seminar was The Human Person as the Foundation of Human Rights. The Seminar opened with the Mass of Christ the King on 21 November 1999 at 8:30 am. This was followed by the Fujen Annual Peace Lecture delivered by Archbishop Nguyen, President of the Council, on the topic of Person-Rights-Peace. In the afternoon Regional Justice and Peace Committees set up stalls displaying posters, books, pamphlets and other materials for display.
